How to Reset the Device Key in PreVeil

If you are encountering issues with your PreVeil installation or need to reinitialize your device, you can reset your device key. Follow the steps below for Windows or macOS to start fresh and recover your account.

Notes

• This process does not delete your PreVeil account — only the device key is reset.

• You must have your private key on another device or a recovery method before starting

  • Add your key to another device, such as a cell phone

  • Set a recovery group

    • If you are a member of a PreVeil organization, the administrator is solely capable of assigning a recovery group to you

  • Create a recovery code file

• All folders in PreVeil Drive will sync down to the local sync directory - ensure sufficient storage space exists and time for synchronization (and encryption services) to process

  • Folders already synced down will be skipped

Resetting the Device Key on Windows

1. Stop PreVeil Services

   • Right-click the PreVeil Key Menu (system tray icon)
     
     

     Open

     

   • Hover over Power Options

   • Select Stop PreVeil Services.
     
     

     Open

     

2. Rename the Data Folder

   • Open File Explorer.

   • Navigate to C:\PreVeilData.

     Open

     

   • Rename the folder to PreVeilData_old.

3. Restart PreVeil Services

   • Go back to the PreVeil Key Menu

   • Hover over Power Options

   • Select Start Services.

   • A new C:\PreVeilData folder will be created automatically.

4. Re-add Your Key or Recover Your Account

   • Open your browser and go to:
     http://127.0.0.1:4003/get-started

   • Follow the instructions to import your private key from another device or recover your account.

Resetting the Device Key on Mac

1. Stop PreVeil Services

   • Open the PreVeil Key Menu in the menu bar.

   • Select Stop Services.

2. Rename the Key Storage Folder

   • Open Terminal.

   • Run the following commands:

     sudo su cd /var/ ls

   • If the preveil folder is listed, rename it:

     mv preveil preveil_old

3. Restart PreVeil Services

   • Use the Key Menu to start services again.

   • A new /var/preveil folder will be created automatically.

4. Re-add Your Key or Recover Your Account

   • Go to http://127.0.0.1:4003/get-started in your browser.

   • Follow the on-screen instructions.
