Troubleshooting PreVeil Desktop Installation Failures: Steps to Clear Data and Retry

If the PreVeil Desktop installer fails or rolls back during installation, follow the steps below to clear residual data and retry the install.

Step 1: Confirm PreVeil Is Fully Stopped

Before making any changes, verify that no PreVeil components are still running:

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

  2. On the Processes tab, look for any entries containing "PreVeil." If found, select each one and click End task.

  3. Check the system tray (bottom-right corner of the taskbar, near the clock). If the PreVeil Key Menu icon is present, right-click it and choose Exit or Quit.

  4. Switch to the Services tab in Task Manager (or open services.msc). If any PreVeil services appear and are running, right-click each one and choose Stop.

Do not proceed until all PreVeil processes and services have been terminated.

Step 2: Rename PreVeilData and Delete PreVeil Folders

These folders may contain leftover data from the failed installation that can interfere with a fresh install.

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\.

  2. Locate the PreVeilData folder. Right-click it, select Rename, and change the name to PreVeilData_old.

  3. Locate the PreVeil folder. Right-click it and select Delete.

Note: Both folders reside at the root of the system drive. Renaming or deleting them may require administrator privileges. If prompted by a UAC dialog, click Yes to allow the change. If you receive an "Access Denied" error, right-click File Explorer in the Start menu and choose Run as administrator, then retry.

Step 3: Retry the Installation

Run the PreVeil Desktop installer again. The installation should now proceed without conflict from leftover files.

Step 4: Recover the Account

Renaming C:\PreVeilData to C:\PreVeilData_old dissociates the private key from the local installation. After reinstalling PreVeil Desktop, you will need to recover your account using either your recovery group or your account recovery file.

Alternatively, if you need to retain the existing local key data, rename C:\PreVeilData_old back to C:\PreVeilData before proceeding.

Step 5: If the Installation Fails Again

If the installer fails a second time after completing the steps above:

  1. Locate the MSI log file generated during the failed installation. By default, Windows writes MSI logs to the %TEMP% directory (type %TEMP% in the File Explorer address bar to navigate there). Look for a file with a name resembling PreVeil_Install_*.log or MSI*.LOG.

  2. If you already have an open Jira ticket, attach the log file to that ticket.

  3. If you do not have a ticket, create one at the PreVeil Service Desk: Submit a Support Request

Include the MSI log file and a brief description of the failure (e.g., the error message displayed, at what point the installer rolled back).
