Cloud Drive Mass File Deletion Issue (Workaround)

Cloud Drive Mass File Deletion Issue (Workaround)

The 6.2.1 upgrade issue has been fixed in 6.2.2, which was released on July 20, 2026. Upgrade to 6.2.2 to receive the fix.

Applies to: PreVeil Desktop for Windows (versions prior to 6.2.1) Addressed in: 6.2.1+ Last updated: July 17, 2026

Summary

A known issue can cause multiple instances of the Cloud Drive process (cloud-drive.exe) to run simultaneously on a single machine. When this occurs, the competing processes can trigger unintended mass file deletions from PreVeil Drive — files may disappear without user action, and in some cases without corresponding trash records.

A fix that adds a single-instance guard to prevent duplicate Cloud Drive processes is included starting with PreVeil Desktop 6.2.1. In the meantime, the workaround below mitigates the issue for affected customers.

Symptoms

  • Files or entire folder contents disappear from PreVeil Drive without user action, often overnight or during periods of inactivity.

  • Deleted files may not appear in the PreVeil Trash.

  • Task Manager shows more than one cloud-drive.exe process running.

  • Cloud Drive sync root registration may fail in a loop, with repeated Access to the cloud file is denied errors in logs.

Workaround

  1. Download the attached file:

  2. Place the file in the following directory:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\PreVeil

Replace <username> with the Windows user's actual username (e.g., C:\Users\jsmith\AppData\Local\PreVeil).

Tip: You can paste %localappdata%\PreVeil into the File Explorer address bar to navigate directly to this folder.

  3. Reboot the computer.

Important: A full reboot is required. Do not use the Key Menu to stop, start, or restart PreVeil services — using the Key Menu can itself re-trigger the duplicate process condition. A complete system restart is the only safe way to apply this workaround.

Resolution

A fix for the duplicate Cloud Drive process issue is included in PreVeil Desktop 6.2.1. However, some customers have encountered installation failures when upgrading to 6.2.1 (the installer may roll back during setup). If you experience an upgrade failure, see Troubleshooting PreVeil Desktop Installation Failures: Steps to Clear Data and Retry for steps to resolve.

The workaround above remains the recommended remediation for customers on versions prior to 6.2.1 who are affected by mass file deletions.
