PreVeil is currently available for Windows 8.1 and above. PreVeil has a web client for email, and it also integrates into Outlook and Gmail.

PreVeil's browser requirements are Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Mozilla Firefox. You can learn more about our supported operating systems here.

Install PreVeil On Windows

  • On the computer where you want to install PreVeil, open your browser and go to preveil.com/download.

  • Check the box to agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, then click the Download for Windows button.

  • Once the download is complete, locate the file in your Downloads folder and double-click it to run the installer.

Note: You will need admin permissions to install this software. Depending on the level of permissions you have, one of two additional steps may be required:

  1. You may have to click Yes in a confirmation box.

  2. You may be prompted to enter admin credentials (user name and password).

  • When the installer package kicks off, you will be presented with the PreVeil License Agreement screen. Select the I accept the agreement radio button, and then click the Next button.

  • On the next screen, click Install to continue.

  • The installation typically takes a few minutes, and when completed the following window displays. Click Finish.

Create Your PreVeil Account

  • Click the PreVeil shortcut on your desktop or open a browser and go to preveil.com/app to create your new account.

  • Click the Create Account button.

  • Enter the email address you want to use as your primary PreVeil ID, and then click the Send Verification Email button.

An email is sent to this address to verify your identity. Since the PreVeil account that gets created is permanently associated with this email address, it is important that personal PreVeil accounts be created with personal email addresses (not work email addresses).

You do not have to enter a password to create a PreVeil account. Your private key is your password. This makes for a much more secure account because:

  • No one can steal your key--it's never stored on a server

  • The key is random and lengthy--it cannot be guessed

  • Keys are unique and not recycled--it's yours and yours alone

  • Access your email account to view the verification code. If you don’t see it in your inbox within a few minutes, check your Spam/Junk folder.

  • Copy the verification code to the browser window and click the Verify button.

  • You are taken to your new PreVeil Inbox and provided with the opportunity to integrate your PreVeil Mail into Outlook or Gmail.

It is not necessary to install PreVeil into Outlook or Gmail in order to send and receive encrypted emails. You can also do all of that in PreVeil's webmail app from your browser. If you decide at a later time that you do want to utilize this integration, you can use these instructions to integrate your mail with Outlook or Gmail.

  • Click on Next.

  • This will bring up a prompt to create a Recovery File for your account. We strongly recommend that you create a Recovery File, as this will allow you to recover your PreVeil encryption key should you need to do so; if that encryption key is lost you will not be able to access your PreVeil account. If a Recovery File is not created at the time of the account creation, you can create one later via the instructions found here.
