Install PreVeil and Create Your Account on Mac

This topic covers instructions for installing and creating your PreVeil account on your Mac computer.

PreVeil is currently available for Mac 11 (Big Sur) and above. PreVeil has a web client for email, and it also integrates into Apple Mail.

PreVeil's browser requirements are Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Mozilla Firefox. Safari is not officially supported at this time. You can learn more about our supported operating systems here.

Install PreVeil on Mac

  • Once the download is complete, find the file under your Downloads folder in Finder, and double-click it to start the installation.

  • When the Mac pop-up box appears, double-click the PreVeil.pkg file.

  • When the PreVeil install window appears, click the Continue button.

  • When you are presented with the PreVeil License window, click Continue.

  • When the Agreement window pops up, click Agree.

  • On the next screen, click Install.

  • You may be prompted for credentials to initiate the installation. Enter your user name and password or use Touch ID if enabled to authorize the installation.

  • While PreVeil is being installed, the following window displays.  You do not need to take action in this window.

  • When the installation is complete, you are presented with a Summary window.  Click Close.

Create Your PreVeil Account

  • In your browser, go to preveil.com/app to create your new account.

  • Click the Create Account button.

  • Enter the email address you want to use as your primary PreVeil ID, and then click the Send Verification Email button.

An email is sent to this address to verify your identity. Since the PreVeil account that gets created is permanently associated with this email address, it is important that PreVeil accounts for personal use be created with personal email addresses, and PreVeil accounts for business use be created with corporate email addresses.

  • Access your email account to view the verification code. If you don’t see it in your inbox within a few minutes, check your Spam/Junk folder.

  • Copy the verification code to the browser window and click the Verify button.

  • Enter your name and check the checkbox to accept the PreVeil Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click on the Create Account button.

  • You will receive notification that your account has been activated and will be prompted to create a Recovery File to protect your PreVeil encryption key. Click on the Create Recovery File button to do so.

You do not have to enter a username and password to create a PreVeil account. Your private key is the method by which you will access your PreVeil account. This makes for a much more secure account because:

  • No one can steal your key--it's never stored on our servers

  • The key is random and lengthy--it cannot be guessed

  • Keys are unique and not recycled--it's yours and yours alone

However, if that private key is lost you will not be able to access your PreVeil account. We strongly recommend that you create a Recovery File, as this will allow you to recover your PreVeil private key should you need to do so. If a Recovery File is not created at the time of the account creation, you can create one later via the instructions found here.
