View-only Permissions and Known Limitations

Summary

PreVeil provides several permission levels when sharing PreVeil Drive folders with others. One of these permissions is View-only, which is the most restrictive and allows the user to only view the shared folder contents in a browser-based viewer. Because the browser-based viewer does not handle all file types, this document is intended to describe the known limitations and how to get the most out of the feature.

Known Limitations by File Type

PDF – Portable Document Format

Display properly – we recommend using PDFs where possible for View-only sharing

PPTX - PowerPoint

Embedded PDFs and embedded Office objects such as charts and tables from Excel or Word do not render.

Text background colors may not always render in viewer

Embedded images and videos work properly

Fonts sometimes do not match original fonts in viewer

DOCX – Word

Embedded PDFs and embedded Office objects such as charts and tables from Excel do not render.

XLSX – Excel

Embedded PDFs and embedded Office objects such as charts and tables from Excel do not render.

Spreadsheets with multiple tabs do not render in viewer

MP4 - Video

Shared videos do not play unless embedded into PPTX file

Other Types

Older MS Office file types are not supported (.DOC, PPT, .XLS). Share these as PDFs

Other application-specific types are not supported (Autocad, Photoshop, etc.). Share these as PDFs

Future

PreVeil is currently working on improvements to the View-only user experience and future releases will remove these limitations.
