Disabling Multi-Tenancy in Windows
What is Multi-Tenancy?
You can find more information about what Multi-Tenancy is and how it is applied on a computer here.
Symptoms of Multi-Tenancy Issues
Depending on some configurations within your Windows operating system environment, there are some scenarios where having Multi-Tenancy enabled may cause issues in accessing your PreVeil account. Some of the symptoms of this issue may include:
An “Error Fetching Data” or “Account Still Initializing” error message in Drive in the PreVeil browser app.
The “Open in Explorer” button in Drive in the browser app being grayed out.
The key menu not showing your account data.
The local PreVeil Drive directory not being present in Windows File Explorer.
If you have PreVeil integrated with Outlook, a pop-up box prompting you to enter a user name and password.
Disabling Multi-Tenancy
If you’re experiencing any of the issues listed above, you can disable Multi-Tenancy by taking the following steps:
Note: The following steps will require that you have administrator level access for your Windows account.
In the Windows search bar, type in CMD.
When the Command Prompt option appears in the search results, select Run as administrator.
Paste or type the following command into the Command Prompt window and hit Enter: C:\PreVeil\daemon\penv\Scripts\daemons.exe config --disable-mt
It should return a response that Multi-Tenancy is now set to false.
Check to see if this resolved the issue for you. If not, a restart of the PreVeil services may also be needed. The easiest way to restart the services will be to reboot your computer. Do so and check again.
Expanded Multi-Tenancy Troubleshooting
Sometimes running the steps above will not disable Multi-Tenancy. Typically, this is due to the account under which you’re running the above steps not having access to the PreVeilData folder where the Multi-Tenancy configuration change is occurring. If running through the above steps does not resolve the issue, we recommend checking the following:
Does the user account have access to the PreVeilData folder?
In some cases, the user may need to gain access to the PreVeilData folder before the above steps to disable Multi-Tenancy will work. To check this:
Open Windows File Explorer.
Navigate to C:\PreVeilData and attempt to access the folder.
If you get the following prompt, click Continue.
Attempt to access the daemon subfolder.
If you get the same above prompt, click Continue again.
Leave Windows File Explorer open in this daemon folder, and try running through the Disabling Multi-Tenancy steps again.
The PreVeilData folder won’t open at all
Occasionally, the user is unable to open the PreVeilData folder at all; clicking on it does not open it or present a box where the user can gain access to it. This is typically due to Windows permissions on that folder with regards to the folder owner. To resolve this:
Open Windows File Explorer and right-click on the C:\PreVeilData folder, and select Properties.
In the Properties box, click on the Security tab, and then on the Advanced button.
Note: The Properties box may appear differently than the screenshot above, but the same Security and Advanced options should still be present.
The owner of the folder should be SYSTEM, but if you are unable to open the PreVeilData folder, then it will likely say “Unable to display current owner” here instead. If this is the case, click on Change.
In the Enter the object name to select box, type in SYSTEM, and click the Check Names button. It should populate the box with the SYSTEM account. Once it does, click OK.
Make the following selections:
Check the Replace owner on all subcontainers and objects box.
Click on the Enable Inheritance button.
Check the Replace all child object permissions entries with the inheritable permission entries from this object box.
Once these three steps have been completed, click on the OK button.
Click Yes.
Try running through the Disabling Multi-Tenancy steps again.
Confirming Multi-Tenancy Has Been Disabled
If you need to utilize some of the expanded Multi-Tenancy troubleshooting, you may also want to confirm that Multi-Tenancy has indeed been disabled. To do so:
Open Windows File Explorer.
Navigate to C:\PreVeilData\daemon.
Right-click on the preferences.json file and select Open with.
Uncheck the Always use this app to open .json files box, then select Notepad as the app to open the file, then click OK.
Verify that Multi-Tenancy is set to false.
