File Lock

With it’s 3.9.0 build, PreVeil introduced the capability to lock files for editing purposes. If you are on 3.9.0 or higher, you will have the ability to lock files for editing. This document will detail how to utilize that functionality.

  • The file lock functionality will only be available for files in shared folders, it will not be available for files in private folders or stand alone files in Drive that aren’t part of any folder.

  • The file lock functionality will only be available for files that are in folders that have been shared with Edit or Edit & Share level permissions, it will not be available for files shared with the Read Only or View Only level of permissions.

  • In Drive, click on the shared folder that has the file in it that you want to edit.

  • In the shared folder, click on the check box next to the file you want to edit.

  • In the details pane for that file, click on the Lock button to lock that file for editing.

  • Once a file has been locked, you can manually unlock it when you’ve completed editing it by clicking on the Unlock button in that file’s details pane.

  • If you do not unlock the file, other users with access to that file will be able to force unlock it after two hours have passed.

  • When a file has been locked by a user, any additional users that have Edit or Edit & Share level access to that file will see that it has been locked by the presence of the lock icon next to that file entry in their Drive.

  • If you click on the check box next to the locked file, you will see some additional information about the lock status, including:

    • The date and time it was locked.

    • The user who locked the file.

    • The date and time you can force unlock the file.

    • A countdown clock as to when that two hour period is up and the file can be force unlocked.
