Desktop PreVeil Version 4.23.0 and Cloud Edit Installation

Release notes for Cloud-editing (Release 4.23.0) feature

The new cloud-edit feature is designed to allow users to edit files stored in PreVeil even when they are not synced to the local device. The description below gives a description of how to use the feature and provides some tips and limitations.

 Prerequisite:

While cloud-edit is supported on release 4.22.0, the Windows version of this feature requires that the user install an external package for the functionality to work (Note that this is not required for the Mac version).

 User action:

1. Download the Handle application from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/handle. The download hyperlink may be found after the table of contents and at the end.

2. Locate the handle.zip file, open it, and extract it.

3. Go to the extracted folder.

4. There will be three choices for handle.exe based on system type.
   If you are on Windows 10 check your System type by opening the start menu, type about, click About your PC, and see System type.

The handle.exe is the 64-bit binary for Windows systems (most users).
The handle64.exe is the x86 binary for Windows systems.
The handle64a.exe is the binary for Windows systems running on ARM-based hardware.

Double-click to launch the executable file.

After agreeing to the license agreement, the Command Prompt window will quickly scroll through installation operations and close. There will not be a signature that it is finished it will simply close.

5. Cut and paste the chosen handle.exe file to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. Note that this move will require administrator permission.

 At this point the user will be able to use the cloud edit feature

 Brief Description:

 The cloud edit feature allows users to edit files even if they are not synced locally to their device. The feature provides a user interface in the browser app (see below).

• When the user uses this interface to edit a file, the file is opened in the default application installed in their computer for that file type (e.g., Microsoft word for .docx file).

• When the edit function is invoked, it will automatically also lock the file for that user (see screenshot below). Note that the edit operation causes the file to be downloaded to a temporary location and the file will automatically be deleted from the computer when the user exits the application.

• The user can then edit that file as they would normally edit the file. The latest changes will be automatically saved to the PreVeil backend anytime the user saves a version or exits the application.

• When the user closes the application, the latest changes will be saved to the Preveil cloud and the user’s edit lock will be released.

 User interface for cloud-edit:

 When a user goes to a file on the Preveil app the user will see an “edit” button next to the “download” button as shown in the picture.

 When the user clicks the edit button:

 The file is opened in the appropriate application and the lock is acquired.

As stated above, when a file is closed it will be unlocked and synced to the PreVeil cloud.

Application Notes:

 As stated earlier, for the feature to work on Windows, the user has to install the handle.exe file as stated in the “Prerequisite” section above.

• Supported file types: Most common file types that can be opened by a user are supported. Here is a list of types that are supported

• NOT SUPPORTED:

  • “.txt” files

  • “.csv” files

• Depending on the network latencies there may be a couple of seconds delay in the application opening when a file is opened for editing.
